Guidelines:
The Athens Area Food Pantry is a non-profit organization under the direction of the Athens United Methodist Church. It is operated by a board consisting of members from churches within the distribution area. The distribution area is the same as the Athens School District Boundaries.
AAFP was formed in 1993 with the guidance of the Rev. Norman Mendell, and through the generosity of the Rev. Donald Neisler, who allows the pantry to operate out of the basement of the Athens Laundromat on Main Street.
Emergency baskets are available during the month by contacting the United Methodist Church at 636-8844. These baskets are handled on a case-by-case basis and may be referred to AAFP by any local pastor or welfare organization in Menard County. Examples of eligibility are: loss of a job, unexpected medical expenses, a change in size of family, and so on. A family not living within the Athens school district, or who is receiving assistance from another food pantry is not eligible.
AAFP has regular patrons who for a period of time, need assistance on a monthly basis. Regular patrons must complete registration forms. Registration forms can be picked up/dropped off at the AAFP during regular distribution times or at any time at the Athens United Methodist Church. The monthly distribution takes place on the third Saturday of each month from 9:30-10:30 am. In order to receive a basket, the patron must phone- in an order eight days prior to distribution (two Fridays before distribution). The necessary contact information will be given to patrons upon the receipt of a completed registration form.
Food baskets are tailor made to the needs of each family depending on its size, whether there are children, and/or health issues. The goal of AAFP is to provide enough canned and dry goods for each family to survive for one week. However, AAFP depends upon donations to operate, and therefore, our distribution may vary due to donations.
